This version of the Spectrum was primarily an aesthetic revision of the model released two years earlier. A significant improvement in the ZX Spectrum Plus was the replacement of the impractical keyboard of the earlier model with a full plastic keyboard.

Internally, the device was equipped with an "Issue 3" Spectrum motherboard with 48 KB of memory. The internal hardware and electronics were identical to those of previous models, making this update largely cosmetic in nature.
