The Nintendo DS was first announced as a separate product group, alongside Nintendo's GameCube console and its other (portable) game consoles, the Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP. Nintendo brings this concept under the name "three pillars". Each of the above mentioned devices belongs under its own pillar. In February 2006, an updated version of the DS was released, the Nintendo DS Lite. This one has a different design from the original DS.
