AST

AST Research was a personal computer manufacturer founded in California in 1980.

AST, founded in Irvine, California in 1980 by Albert Wong, Saffy Cressay and Thomas Jan. (The company name AST comes from the initials of the three founders.) AST’s first business was to manufacture and to sell a wide range of microcomputer expansion cards, and later to IBM personal computers The focus has been on replacing the built-in IBM standard I / O cards with higher density ones. As other PC manufacturers improved the integration of peripheral controls on the motherboard, AST’s first business was exhausted, developing its own desktop, mobile and server markets. In 1991, Fortune was selected by the US economic magazine Fortune as one of the top 500 US companies by sales.

The business has started to follow a downtrend because personal computers have not accepted the trend toward commercialization. AST insisted on developing and using only the components in the manufactured PC instead of the OEM’s specialized PC.

AST Research was acquired by the Samsung Group on August 11, 1996, and transferred its name and intellectual property rights to a new company named AST Computer LLC in January 1999.

From 1995 to 1998 AST sponsored the British football club Aston Villa.
